Safe driving and work zones

MVA slides 31–43

Detailed reading

Use space and attention together: scan ahead, select a suitable speed and keep a following gap. The deck recommends at least 3–4 seconds; increase it for weather, poor visibility or large vehicles.

Deeper study

Work-zone lanes, surfaces and shoulders may change suddenly. Read signs early, merge calmly, watch workers and equipment, and follow the posted limit. Camera enforcement is not the definition of a safe speed.

Reflection question

Study prompt: identify two changes you will make before entering a work zone.

Work-zone camera fines

Camera fines for speeding above the limit: 12–15 mph $60; 16–19 $80; 20–29 $140; 30–39 $270; 40+ $500. Double these amounts when workers are present. The camera threshold does not permit speeding below it.
